The first living thing in space

In 1957, Laika the courageous dog became the first living thing in space when the Soviet Union sent Sputnik 2 into orbit. There had been many strays that the Soviets volunteered for previous mission, but none went as far as Laika. Many speculated that Laika would be the first to venture out and return, however she was put to sleep before life support systems gave out and would never touch ground again.
