Going through a phase

The Moons motion around the earth give us a month, and the time it takes the Moon to return to the same spot is 27.32 days. This is known as the sidereal month. The cycle which we are familiar with is the time it takes for the moon to go through a complete cycle of phases. To go from Full Moon to Full Moon take 29.53 days. This is known as the synodic month. Common belief is that there is a dark side to the moon, perhaps due in part to the popular album "Dark side of the moon" by Pink Floyd. This however is incorrect, as every place on the moon experiences a cycle of lunar day and night. However, the nearside of the moon always faces us, due to the force exerted by earth gravity causing a braking force that has slowed down the Moon's rotation so that one side is locked facing earth.
